National Gallery of Art, Washington
Published in Hardcover by Harry N Abrams (June, 1985)
Authors: John Walker, National Gallery Of Art, and J. Carter Brown
Average review score:

Beautiful Book!
This is a beautiful book! The color plates are very nice and are good representations of the actual paintings. Brief histories are also presented. I bought it after my first visit to the National Gallery of Art and before my second visit. I enjoyed the second visit much more because I felt that I really knew what was going on with the artists and paintings. Get the book and then go to the National Gallery of Art!

A Classic
This book is one of my favorites, and has been for many years. Its beautiful color illustrations are grouped by the period and country in which they were created. The book presents works (mostly paintings) from many countries (mostly Western) beginning in the Byzantine era, extending up until the early twentieth century. Many of the works are accompanied by art historical abstracts which offer insight for both the inexperienced and learned art enthusiast. This is a great book to have around as an extensive survey of Western painting.

Network Interrupts: A Programmer's Reference to Network APIs
Published in Paperback by Addison-Wesley Pub Co (March, 1994)
Authors: Ralf Brown, James Kyle, and Jim Kyle
Average review score:

A class of its own!
Network Interrupts is not only a companion of PC Interrupts or an ordinary reference, it is a more than complete and comprehensive collection of the network-related interrupt calls which have been implemented by various networking software over the years. It is a fact that the probability of conflict between different programs increases and hundreds of software vendors have extended the basic set of services in often incompatible ways. Nobody could write a better book, as a tool to help you track down undesirable interactions between various programs running on the same PC, than Ralf Brown & Jim Kyle. Every detail is well documented especially on the most important parts marked as "undocumented" or "internal". On this point you can find enough specific warnings for a better understanding. I recommend this book for every programmer's bookshelf!

The best collection about interrupts around the PC & Network
This book contents the biggest collection of information about interrputs on the PC and interrupts for the Network. I self founded a valuabe information about Banyan vines and CDROM. It is my first time, that I use the AMAZON.com. I find this virtually Bookstore GREAT! Fabulous, only the best one. This bookstore has all that I searched!. And I think the prices are very interesting. Bye

New Jerome Bible Handbook
Published in Hardcover by Liturgical Press (December, 1992)
Authors: Joseph A. Fitzmyer, Roland E. Murphy, and Raymond Edward Brown
Average review score:

An excellent resource
The "New Jerome Biblical Handbook" remains one of the most important books to come out of religious publishing in some time. It is an absolute essential for the busy clergyman who does not have the time for the in-depth reading and studying required for the far more academic "New Jerome Biblical Commentary". It will also make a worthy addition to the personal shelf of any informed layperson who wishes to become more biblically literate. It should also be found in every parish library.

What the "Handbook" does, is condense and distill the dense and academic material in the "Commentary" and present it in an easily recoverable fashion. The reader will gain insights into every book of the Bible, as well as into the basics of modern critical methodology, without requiring the technical training of the academic or seminarian.

From a theological standpoint, the "Handbook" could best be described as "moderate", rejecting both the anti-intellectualism of the fundamentalist far right as well as the deconstructionist tendencies of the far left. The editors did their work well in presenting a balanced picture of the best of modern biblical scholarship in an easy to read and comprehend format.

Certainly worth 5 stars.

The Best Companion for the Best Bible Commentary
I heartily recommend this book to all those who wanted a quick reference about the Bible! Maybe viewed as a supplementary to the NJBC, I find this book a handy one to bring along during my theology classes, and a useful tool for easy reading. The best handbook made for the best bible commentary! It has charts and visuals not usually found in the NJBC, which I think helps summarize and condense the immense scholarly works found in the NJBC.A great Companion to NJBC!

Nightmares and Geezenstacks
Published in Paperback by Bantam Books (February, 1979)
Author: Fredric Brown
Average review score:

A stimulating exercise of the mind
It goes without saying that Fredric Brown is a master of the art when it comes to short stories, and if you love short short stories, the ones in this book are prime cut. The majority of these are 1 to 3 pages and nearly all have surprise endings. What amazes you most is how Brown can manage to top the story you just read, but a couple of stories later, it happens. Thought provoking to the max, his imagination seems to be completely unbound as you venture from one unbelievably profound situation to the next. How Brown manages to seize your total attention in 3 pages or less is a tribute to his craft of opening and perhaps even invading your thought process. I place this book on a pedestal of its own, a standout in the crowd. Read it, by all means, and at your own risk of becoming a deeper thinker.

fantasy short stories
Mr. Brown demonstrates his sense of the unusual and O'Henryisk manner in this can't put it down collection of stories and thought provocing what ifs. I read this collection for the first time in 1961, and have been haunted by it ever since. A delightful read.

Old Frontiers (The First American Frontier)
Published in Hardcover by Ayer Co Pub (June, 1971)
Author: John P. Brown
Average review score:

OLD FRONTIERS is pioneer/native history in compelling tales.
Brown presents factual well-documented stories of personal triumph and loss during the settling of Cherokee frontiers by whites in OLD FRONTIERS. The book is obviously a labor of love for the author. It is compelling and provacative, full of interesting characters and heroic deeds on both sides of the struggle

An rare glimpse of a little-known period in American history
I would recommend this book highly to any Native American especially those with Cherokee ancestry. The style is definitely not modern but I found the story rivetting - even more so because it is an actual historical account

Old Thunder and Miss Raney
Published in Hardcover by Dorling Kindersley Publishing (01 September, 2000)
Authors: Sharon Darrow and Kathryn Brown
Average review score:

smart and witty children's book
This is a charming book by a skilled Southern storyteller. Darrow takes what could be a lightweight folk tale and adds a sophisticated moral that doesn't underestimate its (young) readers. The illustrations nicely compliment the book, adding just the right amount of whimsy.

Old Thunder and Miss Raney
This was an wonderful story. My child loved the illustrations and the "fiddle-dee" and other repeated phrases throughout the book. It was a long story but flowed very well keeping my child's interest to the very end of the book. She loves the horse named Old Thunder and the tale about how the biscuits were made. We also plan to bake the biscuits from the recipe on the back cover. I recommend this book to anyone with small children with a love of horses and horse stories.

On Christmas Eve
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (March, 2001)
Authors: Margaret Wise Brown and Nancy Edwards Calder
Average review score:

A Classic
I have been reading this book to preschoolers and Kindergarteners for over 15 years. They all love it. The book I have is an older edition and it only has a few colors in the illustrations. It doesn't matter, though. The words are so descriptive that the children are captivated. That's quite an accomplishment in today's world of TV and DVDs!

A wonderfully calm, quiet story of children's Christmas
This book is a wonderful book for a quiet calm, nighttime story during the Christmas Holidays. It has calming text, calming pictures and yet it captures the majesty and awe that is Christmas better than any other Christmas story I've read. If you have young children and love Christmas, I heartily recommend this book.

One More Valley, One More Hill: The Story of Aunt Clara Brown (Landmark Books)
Published in Library Binding by Random Library (24 December, 2002)
Author: Linda Lowery
Average review score:

An Amazing Story of Compassion and Determination
This is the little known story of an extraordinarily brave and determined woman that influenced the lives of many people. Against all odds, Clara Brown bought her freedom out of slavery, successfully established herself in the west, and assisted other ex-slaves in the same difficult journey. The life of Clara Brown, told by Linda Lowery, proves to be an amazing story of heroism and compassion. I highly recommend sharing this story with your children, as it is beautifully written and historically important.

Inspirational and Excellent!
From Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks to George Washington Carver and Harriet Tubman, there are scores of African-Americans who were and are genuinely heroes. However, after reading this tale, I can't think of a single individual who possessed the drive, determination and sheer guts of Clara Brown. Lowery has uncovered a slice of both American and African-American history that's exciting and inspirational. My young daughter loved this book, as did I, and the author's fluid writing style really keeps the tale tantalizing and emotionally moving. Black or white, young or old, I highly recommend this book. Though largely unknown today, Clara Brown's life story is one that really should be told, and Lowery's book is an excellent introduction to this amazing woman.
